Running in the dark can be a peaceful and invigorating experience, but it comes with some unique challenges. Whether you are a seasoned ultramarathoner or just heading out for an evening jog, preparation is key to staying safe.
We’ve gathered tips and advice our very own Endure24 team, consisting of experienced ultra-distance and endurance runners, to help you feel confident when navigating your training throughout these dark, winter months.
Sophie’s Top Tip: “Buddy Up!”
Sophie is a Senior Account Executive with a passion for sports and enthusiastic approach to any challenge.
‘I’ve been running for over 10 years, but really got into it when I moved to Brighton 4 years ago. In 2025 I’ll be completing my fourth marathon at the London Marathon, having ran Brighton twice and Manchester this year. Running for me is a chance to escape from any stresses in my life, explore new places and either take time for myself or catch-up with friends. I helped set up our very own Threshold Run club with Neil, which has been going nearly 4 years now and sees us out every week, no matter how wild the weather on the seafront is!
My top tip is there is power in community; running with others is not only safer but more enjoyable.
- Find a running buddy or join a group. A companion can help you spot hazards and provide support in case of an emergency. Plus, having company makes the experience more fun and motivating.

Neil’s Top Tip: “Be Seen!”
Neil is our business development manager, focusing on securing new sponsors and partnerships.
‘After years of running half-marathons and 10Ks, along with playing football, I tackled my first marathon in 2018. Since then, I have completed several marathons and ultramarathons, achieving a major milestone by finishing my first 100-miler in 2023.
My top tip is to make sure you stand out. Visibility is crucial for running safely in low light conditions.
- Wear reflective or bright clothing: Reflective strips, glow-in-the-dark accessories or bright colours will make you more noticeable to drives and other runners.
- Invest in a high-quality headtorch: Not only will this light up your path, but it will also alert others to your presence. For longer runs, bring a backup battery or a second light source just in case.
So long as you feel safe doing so, running at night can be massively enjoyable. Good luck in your training!’
Georgia’s Top Tip: “Plan for the Night.”
Georgia is an Associate Account manager here at Threshold and is a self-confessed adventurer, pizza lover and espresso martini expert.
‘Before starting training for an ultramarathon, the previous distance I had completed was a half marathon. Particularly from a walking point of view, I hadn’t fathomed how long I would be on my feet (24 hours and 36 mins)! Every time training got tough, I thought about all the amazing charity and non-charity participants who take on our events each year, remembering all of those who came before me crossing the finish line.
My top tip is to know your route; familiarity and foresight can make a world of difference.
- Stick to well-lit and familiar paths. Avoid poorly lit parks and trails where visibility may be compromised.
- If you’re exploring new routes, map them out beforehand and consider driving by during the day to get a sense of the terrain.
- Eat something warm before heading out and bring snacks if you are planning a long run. Proper fuelling keeps your energy levels steady and prevents fatigue.
Make sure you are prepared and energized for every step of the journey!’
Brooke’s Top Tip: “Stay Aware.”
Brooke is our Partner Marketing Executive, constantly putting her passion for sports event management to the test.
‘I started running properly when I returned to Threshold after graduating from university, it’s very hard not to take up running when it’s all everyone talks about in the office! I quickly took on my first 10km in Brighton, then the Victoria Park half, and then a turn of events at home meant I wanted to raise money for a charity close to my heart. I ended up signing up to Race to the Stones 100km straight through, which meant I took on the Brighton Marathon as part of my training for RTTS.
My top tip is to stay alert, your senses are your best safety tools.
- Leave the headphones at home or use just one bud to stay aware of your surroundings. This helps you detect potential hazards like oncoming traffic, cyclists, or other runners.
- Let someone know your plan. Share your running route and estimated return time with a friend or family member. Apps like Strava Beacon or Find My Friends can provide real-time location sharing for extra piece of mind.
- Have the means to get a bus or taxi home if you have any problems/injuries.
Being aware will give you peace of mind every step of the way.’
Ed’s Top Tip: “Stay Warm.”
Ed is our Marketing Manager here at Threshold, working to promote our events and get more people outside and active.
“I started running in 2016 and quickly gravitated towards trail ultramarathons. I ran my first 50k in 2019, and my first 100-mile race in 2023. In 2024, I was lucky enough to run the iconic Western States Endurance Run in California, which meant a lot of running at night, including through a river!
My top tip is to beat the chill as running at night often means colder temperatures.
- Layer up to stay warm and dry. Pack moisture-wicking layers you can easily add or remove as temperatures change. Instead of relying on a bulky hoodie, opt for lighter, versatile pieces like arm sleeves or a light jacket. Don’t hesitate to adjust your layers – it can make all the difference!
- Avoid standing still. Resting for too long at pitstops, or when you’re out and about on a run, can cause you to get cold and stiff. Keep moving to stay warm and maintain momentum.
Keep the cold at bay and make every night run as enjoyable as possible!’
